NotScripts for Chrome disables JavaScript, iframes, and plug-ins

When we browse the Web these days, there's a lot of JavaScript going on all the time. That's what Google uses to track us via Analytics and what sites use to show animations, etc. But sometimes you might want to disable all, or some, of that JavaScript - either on a single site, or in general. Not just because you don't like Analytics (which you can opt out of anyway), but because JavaScript is sometimes used maliciously.

Firefox users can do this easily using NoScript, but Chrome users don't have it so easy. Since Chrome architecture is significantly different, creating an add-on that would block JavaScript from executing is pretty tricky.

NotScripts is one effort to create such an add-on, and it seems to be fairly well advanced.

The whole thing feels like a giant workaround. It works "by cleverly using HTML5 storage caching to overcome the timing issues," and it requires you to set a manual password by editing an external file so that sites cannot view the extension's white list of "allowed sites."

It also doesn't provide advanced protection against clickjacking and other malicious JavaScript practices, which NoScript (for Firefox) does provide. But the general feeling I get is that the developer is doing all he can to provide a similar level of protection -- it's just far from trivial, given Chrome's architecture.

First Custom ROM for the Droid 2 Released

“And they said it couldn’t do that!” Following the string of scares that started with the Droid X regarding eFuse, locked bootloaders, and killer unicorns, many were skeptical of the device’s hackability. While there is still a lot of work to be done before the device is “truly” unlocked, Droid 2 owners can now say they are able to flash their first custom ROM onto the device through Koush’s Bootstrap Recovery.

The name of the ROM is Epic Unleashed and is currently on version 1.1. Technically, it’s still a very limited release. Things have been deodexed, stuff has been optimized, and bloatware has been blown to smithereens, but that’s as far as you’ll get with this one. It’s still pretty awesome, though, if you like a phone that boots up a bit cleaner and if you don’t fancy removing unwanted apps yourself. It’s also literally the only option you have.

The first “custom” ROM for the DROID 2 surfaces

The circle is complete. After all the nay-saying and fear that was surrounding the DROID X and the DROID 2 being locked down so tight that “modding” and “hacking” the devices would not be possible, it appears that the DROID 2 has its first “custom” ROM. We use the term custom lightly, this is actually just a cleaned-up version of the stock ROM that is included with the D2.

The ROM is known as the EPIC ROM (by Matt4542) and can be downloaded over at the Droid Life forums. Of course your D2 needs to be rooted and have the Clockwork Recovery flashed to be able to use the ROM. Over on the forums you can see some of the scripts that were included in EPIC, none of them too fancy, but it is definitely a start for something better in the future.

Just a reminder, there is always a potential risk with doing anything of this nature to your device. Also, you will be voiding your warranty in the process. So, take a look over at the Droid Life forums to install and run the new ROM and let us know how it goes for you.

To give you an idea of the kinds of strange and unique gifts you can find on ThinkGeek, let’s imagine a hypothetical morning in the life of a hypothetical college student who owns many of ThinkGeek’s products. You’ll notice how these things make his morning so much more exciting.

First, his super-loud alarm clock that doubles as a bed-shaker wakes him up for his morning classes. When he heads off to shower behind his shower curtain that has the periodic table printed on it, he uses some bacon soap or caffeinated soap to get clean. In my post introducing iTunes 10, I mentioned that the new iTunes logo was sure to be controversial. Looks like I got that right! Wired News is reporting that a designer emailed Steve Jobs to tell him that the new logo "sucks" and throws away a decade of "instant product recognition." The designer, Josh Kopac, got one of Steve's trademark terse responses: "We disagree."

A lot of people in the design community agree with Kopac that the iTunes 10 logo has got to go. Check out Dribbble, the playground where lots of pro designers preview their new work, and you'll find several replacement iTunes 10 icons already. One that seems to have gained real traction is a magenta version by Chris Carlozzi. It's got 154 likes on Dribbble, and has been touted by other blogs as the icon iTunes 10 should have had.

If you don't love the new logo, take your pick of icons from Dribbble, or show us some other alternatives you like better. If you think the new logo's just fine, here's your chance to offer a defense in the comments.

Andres Rodriguez: Masters almost done! Job searching again!!

After a year of being a full time student of the MS in Telecommunications & Networking at Florida International University, and having successfully finished my Google Summer of Code project for Ubuntu (TestDrive Front-end), is time for me to start job searching again!

Currently, I find myself in my last semester of class and I’ll be graduating this Fall 2010 (December 2010). This means that a new stage in my life begins and that I need to start looking for a job to start working as soon as I finish my Masters Degree!

I’m looking for a job in Network Administration (given to my studies) or Linux System Administration/Engineering, however I’d really like to get a job in Open Source, that will keep me really close to my passion, Ubuntu. Furthermore, I’d also like to continue to work with HA Clustering, loadbalancing, etc, or other technologies, such as Virtualization, Cloud Computing (even though that I might not have much experience, but I’m a quick learner), either on Implementation as a SysAdmin, or as a Developer, as long as it keeps me close to Ubuntu. That’s what makes me happy .
